Photo Editing:-http://www.gimp.org/ - A very comprehensive open source image editor. Definitely learn how to use this if you do not want to pay for Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro (or you use Linux).http://picasa.google.com/ - Very easy to use - perfect for beginners.General Productivity:-http://www.openoffice.org/ - Amazingly good alternative to Word, Excel, Powerpoint. You can even create powerpoint slideshows and export them to 'Flash'. (I use this)Text Editor:-http://www.pspad.com/ - I use this myself.FTP:-http://filezilla-project.org/ - Again, I use this myself.HTML Editor / Website builder:-http://www.evrsoft.com/1stpage3.shtml - A bit buggy - but great for free...Screensaver Creator:-http://www.irfanview.com/ - I use this.Software You Might Want To Consider Paying For (OK - this makes a mockery of the post title!):-
http://www.jasc.com/ - (Paint Shop Pro) - I use this. Some people reckon it is better than Adobe Photoshop elements. (Though I am considering changing to Photoshop in the near future)...

www.flickr.com - A great place to go to hang out with other photographers. There are some great groups there. You can also upload and share your own photos very easily. - I use this.http://www.photobox.com/ - If you live in Europe - this is a great online service for getting your photos printed. I tried a few others that were cheaper, but photobox has the best quality and service I have seen so far. (OK so it is not free to get your photos printed and sent to you - but it is free to upload them!)Other Online Resources:-
